Blackfish is the embodiment of the waters of the Pacific west coast of British Columbia- specifically the area around the Sunshine Coast and Haida Gwaii. She takes her name from orcas, who along with being called ‘killer whales’ are also sometimes called ‘blackfish.’ She is the sea, and is part of the sea, with a kelp forest for hair, the midsection of a seal, the hindflukes of an orca, and a heart that is an octopus. Sometimes she is small enough to fit inside the shell of a hermit crab- other times she becomes so large that humpback whales are like salmon fry to her. She doesn’t speak, though she sings wordlessly and laughs often- you can always know where she’s been because she leaves floating rafts of kelp drifting in her wake.
Blackfish is one of my favourite character designs- is it tacky to say you like your own character designs? Oops.
